A skill to critique is essential for artists in order to succeed. whether it is self-evaluation, receiving criticism or providing criticism No matter what the type, it can influence persons thinking process in a detrimental or beneficial way as it shapes perception. Without a doubt, it is rather difficult to come up with a unique formula that would work in every occasion because we all have different understandings on what is important and what we consider to be acceptable. It is of importance to understand that the goal of criticism is to be as helpful to the creator of content as possible. When talking about this topic people tend to leave out the aspects of receiving criticism as an essential aspect. The analysis doesn’t work if the person receiving it is not receptive of the information that is being offered.
Talking with other students about this I can agree that there are some guidelines that one can follow regarding criticism. First of all, it is important to establish the subject that is being critiqued. if we are specifically talking about works of art then start off by understanding the idea behind the artwork itself following why was it was created. stick to the topic don’t waste time on trying to pinpoint everything around it as it does not help anyone. Give reasoning behind your opinion as it will be more helpful than just saying I hate that or this. Be subjective as personal style of preference don’t matter as long as the artwork gets across the intended point. Ask questions as it can help crystallise one’s opinions. And remember that in every situation, there has to be something positive as it is crucial to not overwhelm the person with negativity as it can defeat the positive aspects of created pieces.
In the end, I can agree with Darrel Rees (2008, p.16), that A person has to be open to constructive criticism and guidance, but ultimately confident enough to make their own mind up.
